CALL TO ACTION
Co-Sponsor the Family Support Services Addiction Act
Editor’s Note: This post was originally published in June 2020, during a period of heightened vulnerability for families navigating addiction. The need it addresses — family-centered support in addiction care — remains urgent.
It remains critically important to strengthen advocacy and legislative influence as the opioid crisis continues to claim lives and devastate families across our nation.
The Family Support Services Addiction Act, originally introduced to Congress on January 9, 2020, was designed to establish a federal grant program for community organizations that provide education, resources, and direct support to families affected by substance use disorder.
This legislation directly addresses longstanding gaps in addiction care — gaps that place both patients and families at increased risk. By recognizing family empowerment and involvement as essential components of successful, long-term recovery, the bill confronts one of the most persistent barriers in addiction treatment: stigma.
For too long, shame and stigma have silenced families, discouraged involvement, and limited access to quality care. This legislation acknowledges what families already know — that recovery does not happen in isolation.
At Angels of Champions, we understand the critical role families play while navigating the complexities of addiction. We have lived this journey. We know that informed, empowered families can advocate effectively, support recovery, and help prevent devastating outcomes.
Family involvement is a bridge — and sometimes that bridge is the difference between life and death.
That is why this legislation matters.
